HALE AT ONE HUNDRED

NELSON, Wednesday.
Mr. Join Colthart, of Nelson, yesterday celebrated his hundredth birthday. He was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and arrived at Ho'bart in 1855. Later lie came to New Zealand and took part in the gold rush in Gabriel's Gully. He joined the Wanganui Rangers' Regiment for the suppression of lawless Maoris and eventually was a telegraph linesman in Taranaki, on the West Coast and at Nelson. Subsequently he. was road overseer in the Glenhope are.a. Except that he is a little hard of hearing Mr. Colthart has all his faculties and takes ah interest in current events, especially in Scotland. He attributes his longevity to regular habits of going early to bed and rising early. He remembers bonfires in the Lanarkshire Hills during the coronation of Queen Victoria.
