ROAD SEASON OPENS

THE MANUKAU CLUB

FIXTURES. Saturday, April 29.—20-Mile Senior, 5Mlle Junior, 2 p.m. Ma y 6.—Centre Race, 23 miles, 2.0U p.m. Saturday, May 20.—Open Road Race of Takapuna Club. The road season this year promises to be a real good one for the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club, for in its opening senior race last Saturday a record for the past two seasons of 26 starters was received. .Particular attention was devoted by the many enthusiasts present to the riding of t W^ e >Y*.° started from scratch 1£? T,£ eS - J?* ? w, S h t. Wade dropped i>wight on the first of the six laps of the 10-mile event. Dwight found his free wheel a handicap on the short course. \V ade lapped in 6.45, 7.32, 7.30, 7.24, 7 40 and 7.34, to gain fastest time;: in 44.255, which was a genuinely fine effort, in view oi the abnormal conditions, a powerful westerly wind and a heavy cold shower during the latter part of the race. Wade's success was most popular: He "is up on a fortnight's holiday from Wangahui. Xhe handicapping was excellent and an excitingly close finish saw a newcomer in J. C. Dolores, off 5.30, win. He rode practically unpaced throughout -and his exhibition marks him as a rider worth watching, •-..;-.., ;.&,. Jack R. Hall (2.15) finished second with a great burst, although there was no necessity for him to sprint, ,as .he had left the rest of his bunch 50 vards back of him in the last quarter-mile. "Jack was second fastest, in 45J.4. ~.; .''v v C. ("Tiny") 'Hansen. was', third in.'the Cotter Gup 15-miler last -year, -\vith the same handicap last he again ran consistently to fill third place again. Hansen rode strongly at the start, but would have done better..with a'jpartner to share the pace: i ;;» v {*&■£>.: New members racing were J. 0? Dblores (the winner), C. Bowden, W. E. Dilworth, C. J. Fanch and C. H. Humphreys...,..- /-. Eight juniors raced in their 'five-miler;; Again a new rider won. G;' W.vHoiland, off 3.0, was the junior. He shaped iivell, and with H. J. Ball, his team mate, lapped along well. His time was 16.43. Big Gordon H. Wheelhouse (scr) did not nave fastest time all his own way, for E. R. Hansen, off 30s, refused to be caught. Wheelhouse just got there in 15.14, after a lone chase after Hansen, who was only a mere 9s slower. ' Both riders are young giants in build, considering that they are under 17 years, the junior age limit.

Before the races Mr. Dave Wilson addresesd the boys on the reception given him when he went around the circuit with a petition for the residents. It was with pleasure that he reminded the riders that they enjoyed a good reputation with the residents, and he .hoped they would continue to do so. *]~ The Eddie Grant Memorial Shield'is now up for competition during the road season and points are_ being awarded as follow:—A win, 5 points;- a second, S; a third,' 1; fastest time, 2, and to start in a race one point. The fine piece of yacca wood which forms the .background was donated by Mr. H. W. Landon-Lane, who has assisted many of the riders in their training • methods. In addition a : championship sash will be given the senior and junior gaining the most fastest times. In the event of a tie, the rider with the best average speed will win. Entries for the centre's first open race of the season on Saturday 'jreek close next Saturday' with club secretaries. The centre -races each month should be keen competitions this year, and the Manukau Club will have far stronger' opposition for the Challenge Shield than it had last season. Papatoptoe, Takapuria, Auckland , and Ijynndale are quite capable of fielding good teams. . , , . ..

A eenior road race over eight laps, 20 miles, and-a junior* race over five miles will bei conducted by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday. The junior: event will commence at two o'clock. Mr. J. D, Anckram's handicaps are • ■ ■

Weather conditions generally .spoilt but. did not dampen the 'enthusiasm for the opening .of the road racing season. The Lynndale Amateur Athletic'.. and Cycle Club commenced the season with a 12%* mile race, 'being two laps of the'circuit' This course is an ideal one, being attest of speed and. stamina,, and--the -strong head wind, with cold, gusty showers, made the test more severe, and more credit -is due to the riders for their steady, performances. "■•■'• :- ; ■ •"•• - ■' ~ '•'"''

A. Gpoder, off 6.15, rode a very fine race for his first' performance, and his effort was deserving of its results. His style, and judgment show promise of 'making him a solid rider. B. His, lap were very consistent,- and more iw'tllj be heard from him; v : ■$ • ■

Ces. Johnson, the club's captain, off 1.15, rode strongly throughout the race to get third place, dropping his cor-marker, ! C.' Goodei", in the first lap, which he did in 19.26, thus creating a club lap record. He also gained second fastest time,in 41.24 3,-5. He is going to be one of the'club's best distance riders. - i . ■■'■ "'.r : ' • ?

H. O. Browne, although not fit. proves he is still a force to be reckoned with. Riding on his. own-oa.^he,scratch .mark,, he gained foirrth' place and' also fastest time by a close margin of 7 «l-5s from Ces. Hugh was always.a close contender for fastest .time when-he was with the Auck* land Club. He is a hard man to. beat.

C. Gooder, on the 1.15 mark,' was 1 just beaten for fourth place after a spirited sprint with Browne. He gained third fastest time. He hais- not been" well, so much can be expected .of him in the future. A word Vbf-praise-must be,; given to young Eric McCurdy for - the "plucky way he rode the whole .race. "'Although only a junior, he rode steadily and determinedly to gain sixth place. He was off the 12.0 mark. • ' -.

Next week the club' will' an 18%mile race, being thre'elaps of the circuit. All riders and intending riders are to meet at 1.45 p.m. Lynndale sports groimd. On May. .13 the.
