SHEEP KILLED.
DESTRUCTIVE DOGS.
OVER 70 ANIMALS LOST.
SIXTY SMOTHERED IN SWAMP.
Sixty sheep were smothered in a swamp as the result of the ravages of dogs on Monday night at Mauku, causing serious loss to Mr. W. Finlay, sheep farmer of that district.
A flock of 500 breeding ewes were driven by dogs on to a roadway crossing a swamp, with a gate at the far end, and pressure from the sheep behind pushed the leaders over the edge of the roadway into tlie water, where they were trampled down by the flock in their efforts to escape from the dogs.
Seven sheep were rescued from the swamp in a weak condition, and may not survive, and Mr. Finlay had to destroy two which had been badly mauled.
On Tuesday night dogs again appeared on the property and worried a flock of this season's lambs. Just about daybreak Mr. Finlay shot one dog dead and wounded another, which he later traced to its kennel and destroyed. Ten lambs were lost.
