RIVER POLLUTED.
SAWMILLERS- FINED. "ACCLIMATISATION" CASE. SERIOUSNESS OF OFFENCE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TE KUIT T . fhis day. In tho Magistrate's fV>-;it to-day, before Mr. F. W. Piatt., S.M., E. Falconer and Co., sawmillcrs, of Kopaki, were charged by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society with the pollution of the Waipa River by allowing sawdust to get into the stream. Defendants stated that they had taken every precaution by erecting a double barricade across a blind gully to contain the sawdust. Owing to storm waters, however, a rjft had scoured and allowed a small quantity of sawdust to escape. James Dobson, inspector for the society, gave details regarding the pollution of the river, stating that traces of sawdust could be seen for miles down* the river towards Otorohanga. The Court, in fining defendants, said Falconer was an experienced miller and should have known the seriousness of the offence. A fine of £10 and costs was inflicted.
