IMPROVED FINANCES.
BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH. REVIEW BY THE MAYOR. A review of the work of the Birkenhead Borough Council was given at a public meeting last evening by the Mayor, Mr. George Mills, and members of the council. The Foresters' Hall was packed. Mr. Albert Hadfield presided. Mr. Mills, who was giving his first public address at Birkenhead, said that when lie assumed office on August 17 last a letter received from the bank referred to the large overdraft, pointing out that the amount of outstanding rates, £6215, on March 31, 1932, was £2090 greater than in 1931. The need of taking action was impressed upon the council, which was informed that under no circumstances would the bank entertain an increase in the limit of £6000 overdraft. A rate collector had been appointed prior to his taking office. Economies were forthwith enforced. To-day, the council had outstanding debts and commitments, with a credit balance of £800. Every economy that could be made must be effected for the next two years._ There were a lot of unemployed married men in the borough, and the suggested scheme for a local water supply would provide suitable employment.
