"PACKED IT."
FIREMAN LEAVES HIS SHIP.
ARREST AFTER TWO YEARS,
"She was a hard ship, sir. That's why I 'packed' it," said Jurgen Andrew Windell (38), a South African ship's fireman, when he appeared in the Police, Gourt this morning and-pleaded guilty to a charge of being absent without leave from the e.s. Suapehu on February 3, 1931. A representative of the vessel's agents in Auckland said Windell was signed on in London for the voyage to New Zealand and return. He deserted the ship at Auckland and for over two years there tvas no trace of him until he was discovered at Te Kuiti. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said he knew there was some trouble on the ship at thp time, but Windell did not leave for the reason he gave. The magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, asked if Windell had been behaving himself since he had been in the country. "Yes, sir," said Mr. McHugh. "He has been working all the time at Te Kuiti." "Although you appear to have been doing well, the matter of leaving a ship is a serious one to shipping companies and I cannot pass it over without imposing a small sentence," said the magistrate in ordering Windell to serve one week in prison.
