NO ELECTION?
DEVONPORT MUNICIPALITY.
Representatives from the Devonport Property Holders' Association s and the North Devonport Ratepayers and Householders' Association met at Devonport on Wednesday to discuss the possibility ot making the local municipal election unnecessary, in the interests of economy. Twelve delegates were present, Mr. is. Kennedy presiding. The chairman stated that public opinion indicated a widespread desire to economise. Everywhere the cry was: "Avoid an election " Two of the selected candidates, Messrs. C. M. Browne (Stanley Bay) and W. H. Mouatt (North Devonport) had retired, in order to avoid the expense of an election, and the thanks of the community were due to them. ■ All the speakers favoured keeping down the expenses of the borough. One delegate pointed out that if economy was not effected somewhere it might mean further " cuts," and working people could not afford that. It was reported that another borough councillor was not seeking re-election, thus leaving three vacancies to be filled. The final selection resulted as follows:— Messrs. E. Aldridge, J. Curtayne, C. Farquharson, T. P. Gilfedder, G. E. Harnett,l G. D. Hardy, H. J. Hutchings, S. Kennedy, and E. H. Little.
In thanking the delegates for their attendance and the harmony shown, the chairman said it reflected credit on Devonport to know that those who took an interest in public affairs were actuated solely by the highest sense of citizenship.
