SCHOOL ATHLETES.
ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.
BOYS BREAK MANY RECORDS.
PAPATOETOE AND WESTMERE WIN.
Despite early morning rain, a shower at noon and the threat of a wet afternoon, the weather was kind to Auckland Primary Schools' Amateur Athletic Association on Thursday, when over 7500 pupils completed the big programme at the annual championship meeting at the Domain. The aggregate points scored in the respective championships were:— Boys.—Papatoetoe, 121; Owairaka, 116; Cornwall Park (1932 champions), 105; King's School, 62%. Girls.—Westmere, 57%; Otahuhu Primary, 57; Owairaka, 44; Cornwall Park (.1932 champions), 40. The outstanding individual performer was V. Dawson, of Papatoetoe, who won both the senior jumps and was second in the hurdles, in which latter event his school filled all three places, thus taking the championship from Owairaka in the very last event of the day. 3 The performance of Owairaka in both sections earned golden opinions on all sides. Its victory would have been extremely popular in view of the wonderful work done by Mr. H. C. Mabbett in coaching his youngsters and organising such a bold bid on the championship from a comparatively small district. One of the most meritorious performances was registered by the Northcote senior overhead ball team. In its heat this team recorded 2.18 4-5, which was 7 l-5s lower than the existing record. The team's performance in the final was better still, the time being 2.15 3-5, which >vill probably stand for some years. Thirty-three schools sent out 1460 pupils to give a magnificent display of massed folk-dancing. The numbers performed were:—Danish Dance of Greeting, Highland Fling, The Ace of Diamonds, and Bellingers Bound. The officers of the association are:— Patron, Mr. T. U. Wells; president, Mr. S. V. Smerdon (Mangere Bridge); vicepresidents, Miss L. K. Evans, Messrs. Spenceley Walker and K. C. Maclaurin; secretary, Mr. G. W. Warner (Cornwall Park); assistanti secretary, Mr. A. F. Scherer (Newmarket)'; treasurer, Mr. H. Tidmarsh (Cornwall Park); executive, Misses I. D. Earle, E. H. Foote and E. M. Phillips, Messrs. W. Birss, H. I. Blow and H. T. Robinson. Among the hundreds of officials were:— Referee, Dr. J. W." Mcllraith; controller, Mr. J. W. McGechie; judges in charge Miss K. W. Longdill and Mr. F. A. Garry; judges' stewards in charge, Misses J. M. Earle and M. Anderson, Messrs. F. Goodwin and B. M. Hayson; record stewards in charge, Messrs. D. V. Moore and A. G. Menzies; starters, Messrs. H. C. Mabbett, L. F. J. Colgan (boys), E. C. Stretton and W. D. Johns (girls); grounds committee, Mr. H. I. Blow in charge, Assisted by 50 Training College students under Sir. W. G. Miller and group organisers; marksmen in charge, Messrs. J. Fawcett (boys) and L. L. J. Grice (girls); marshals in charge, Messrs. C. F. Stratford (boys), A. B. Fordyce and C. W. Boswell (girls); overhead ball steward in charge, Mr. E. W. B. Caddy; timekeeper in charge, Mr. A. H. M. Smith.
Altogether the plan of organisation was remarkably well-conceived and admirably earned out, and a testimony to the care and attention devoted to the complete arrangements by the secretary, Mr. G. W. Warner. The president, Mr. S. V. Smerdon, was not only popular, but carried out the duties of his high office with ditrnity and distinction. The Auckland Primary Schools' Amateur Athletic Association was founded about 30 years ago, and has held sports meetings annually since that time, except for two years during the war. The association has grown steadily, and this year 56 schools were affiliated, including three which have not participated previously—Swanson, Takanini and Waitakere. This year's aggregate entries of 7615 were a record. Results 'of finals\yGIRLS* EVENTS. /50 Yards (under 8). —M. Smith (Otahuhu) 1, M. White (Manurewa) 2, M. Cowie (Cornwall Park) 3.
