SURF LIFE-SAVING.

INTER-PROVINCIAL CONTEST.

WELLINGTON MEETS AUCKLAND.

Surf men are reputed to be liardy, and the fact that Lyall Bay (Wellington), Takapuna and Milford Clubs holding a competition to-morrow on Takapuna Beach, confirms the fact. Tlie coinpetition, which te an inter-provincial fixture for the Mcintosh Cup, involves a team representing the champion club of Wellington, Lyall Bay and the two leading Auckland teams, Milford and Takapuna, champions respectively in sevenmen events and four-men events. The Mcintosh contest includes not only seven and four-men events, but also a march past, and is accordingly a test of real merit for surfmen. This year, in the seven-men event, there will be no ballot for places, each club thereby pitting their beet men against the other in water positions. One of the best features of the contest is that teams in the water events will take the water together, and accordingly race to the buoys throughout. The success of this idea was proved at the Mission Bay championships, when heats of three were run off. According to report, the Milford Club is contemplating taking on wrestling as a winter pastime. The Takapuna Club has had a mat for a few seasons, and members have frequently been seen to advantage in the Town Hall. Next season clubs should consider beach wrestling as a feature of their surf carnivals. The team captain of Te Puke (Bay of Plenty) was in town during the week, .and it is understood that he discussed the question o£ eurf boats.' At present the only club in New Zealand with a proper surf boat ifi Maranui in Wellington. In the Bay of Plenty there would be plenty of scope for surf boats, and most interesting competitions could be run between the three bay clubs, Te Puke, Opotiki, and Whakatane. , _ „T . c The Auckland Centre of the Surf Lifesaving Association should consider this matter with a view to getting efficiency on open surf beaches round Auckland. H. P. Congdon, formerly captain of the well-known Cronulla Club of New South Wales, is interesting himself in «Jie Surf Life-saving Association. He was for seven years captain of the club, being recognied as one of the leading beltmen in Australia. With men of his knowledge the Surf Life-saving AssMiation - be able to conduct some interesting carnivals - ■ - - ■ - » -
