WELLINGTON, this day.
Struck on the head last evening by a man who stepped out from behind a hedge, David Browning, an engineer, of 70, Hataitai Road, received a severe gash that required medical attention.
Browning was going up the pathway leading to his house, which stands back about 25yds from the road, and when he was passing through a hedge a man stepped out and struck him. Browning was almost at his own back door when assaulted. When he cried out, his attacker fled.
Browning was taken to hospital, where he received attention. Later he returned to his home.
Cyril Otto Foothead, aged 22, appeared in the Police Court, charged with assaulting Browning. 'Detective-Sergeant Revell said Detectives - Robinson and Campin had prosecuted inquiries during the night, and at four o'clock this morning arrested the accused. Counsel for accused intimated that he intended to plead guilty. It was only fair to state that it was not a case of attempted robbery. There was much more in it than appeared on the surface.
The police were granted a remand to April 26. Bail was fixed at £50.
