NEW EVEREST FLIGHT.

High Winds and Sweltering Temperatures. THREE OF PARTY INJURED. (Received 10.30 a.m.) . ■"' ■ CALCUTTA, April 7. It is understood that when the weather is favourable a second flight will be carried out over Mount Everest by the Houston expedition. The object is to secure more cinema films and photographs. Dr. Gupta, the Indian meteorological officer attached to the expedition, and his two assistants, were severely burnt when a hydrogen observation balloon burst into flames as it was about to be released to take a reading of windstrength at high altitudes. The flyers are sweltering in a temperature of 103 degrees in the shade. High winds are still preventing further flights.

VERDICT AWAITED. Secession Referendum in West Australia. TWO STATE ELECTIONS. SYDNEY, April 7. General elections will be held in two States to-morrow, namely, South Australia and West Australia. A referendum on the question of secession from the federation will also be an issue for the electors in West Australia, where the interest is at fever heat. All the other States are awaiting the verdict with interest, as a decision in favour of secession is regarded as certain to have important repercussions in Eastern Australia. There are 121 candidates for 41 seats to be contested in West Australia. In th.e other nine electorates the members have been returned unopposed. Never before in the history of that State have Ministers been so seriously challenged in their electorates.
