OVERSEAS FREIGHTS.
QUESTION OF REDUCTION.
LITTLE HOPE DISCERNED. Overseas freight rates, in relation to the forthcoming tariff revision, were discussed at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce this morning. The Associated Chambers forwarded a letter from the Meat Producers' Board, which stated that the time was not opportune to arrange for a reduction in freights. The Associated Chambers advised that owing to the increase in the exchange rate little hope could be held out for a reduction of outward freights in the near future, and said that they proposed reopening the question at a more opportune time. They had decided, however, to recommend to the council that neither the Auckland Chamber nor the Associated ClianVbers drop the matter. They took this attitude on the ground that the main obstacle at present to lower freights on export produce appeared to be the absence of inward freights to New Zealand, on account of the restriction of imports, due to the high exchange and the present level of the tariff. It was suggested that the revision of the tariff be pressed in the interests of an early reduction of outward freight rates.
