NEW CHAIRMAN.
RUGBY LEAGUE HEAD.
RETIREMENT OF MR. RHODES.
MB, GREY CAMPBELL FOLLOWS
It was revealed at the final executive meeting of the Auckland Rugby League Board of Control last evening that Mr. George Rhodes had decided to resign the chairmanship as from the annual meeting next week. His successor will bo Mr. G. Grey Campbell, well-known in Auckland as a member of the City Council, the Transport Board, and other institutions. He was given a hearty reception last evening by his future colleagues in football management circles. When general business had been dealt with, Mr. R. Doble urged that, in view of 1 his pending retirement after many years of administrative service, Mr. Rhodes well deserved to be honoured with life membership by the controlling body.
Life Membership Motion. Messrs. E. Stallworthy and L. Binns, who, like Mr. Doble, are delegates on the council, together with the club nominees on the board, Messrs. J. W. Probert and J, Rukutai, and the xeferees' representative, Mr. W. Mincham, endorsed the suggestion, each speaker testifying to Mr. Rhodes' zeal and careful direction of ] Auckland League affairs for some years past. Mr. E. J. Phclan, a trustee and vicepresident, formally presented a resolution recommending Mr. Rhodes to the New Zealand League for life membership, this being carried by acclamation. Mr. Rhodes, in returning thanks for the tribute, mentioned that his resignation' was imperative owing to business calls that might entail his frequent absence from the city. On Monday evening he would have the pleasure of installing the new chairman, whom he was pleased to see in attendance. Mr. Grey Campbell would bring to bear on the Auckland League administration the benefits of his experience in public life. Mr. Grey Campbell briefly expressed appreciation of the remarks made. "Football has been in my veins from boyhood," he said. "I have been a keen Rugby League supporter and frequenter of Carlaw Park for a number of years, though that may not be generally known, and I am now looking forward to my responsible duties in cloecr contact with the members of this board."
The retiring chairman has been identified with the Auckland League since 1921, when ho became a groundsman at Carlaw Park, and eventually ground superintendpnt. Mr, Rhodes has been management chairman and a trustee of the League for the past, six and a half years, having succeeded Mr. W. J. Hamill (now lion, organiser of tho New Zealand League), who served for five years. ,
■L Mr. Campbell's Public Work. Mr. Grey Campbell, a public accountant, has held a seat on the Auckland Cif? Council for the past four years. He is chairman of the public services committee and a member of the finance committee. He is also a member of the Auckland Transport Board, chairman of the Auckland Community Singing Committee, and is well-known over the radio to young folk as "Uncle Cam." A native Aucklander, he has always taken an active interest in athletics, and at one time was an Auckland Rugby Union referee. For years past, however, ho has been a regular patron of Carlaw Park. In view of the position be is now to fill as president of the Board of Control, it is perhaps an advantage that ho has never given allegiance to any particular club, though a keen critic and general supporter of tho codc.
