SURF LIFE-SAVING.
QUESTION OP AUTHORITY. .AUCKLAND CENTRE MEETING. At a meeting last night of the Auckland head centre of the Surf Life-Saving Association, the following sub-committees were appointed:—Carnival and competition, Messrs. J. Meikle (Waitemata), A. Gardner (Brown's Bay), R. M. Moor (Opotiki); gear and equipment, Messrs. W. Elworth (North Shore), N. F. Brown (Takapuna), J. Coate (Waitemata) competition judging, Messrs. S. V. Higgins (Takapuna), A. Gardner (Brown's Bay), J. Meikle (Waitemata), F. Marriage (Milford), R* M. Moor (Opotiki); constitution, one delegate from each club.
"Proper authority -is necessary to ensure that qualified surfmen have full charge of any person taken from the water, apparently drowned, until the arrival of a doctor," said Mr. K. C. Raid, chairman, in the course of a discussion. Mr. Reid explained that while there was no feeling of antagonism against any organisation it was possible that someone whose training in resuscitation was not so proficient as that of a qualified surf life-saving club member might try to assume control after a rescue, and consequently a life might be further endangered. It Was decided that a recommendation be made to the New Zealand Council of the Surf Live-Saving Association that it should take steps to gain the necessary authority for surfmen.
