ROLLS CLOSED.
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS,
VOTING BY CROSS SYSTEM,
"HELPFUL TO ALL CONCERNED*
Fifty claims for enroln-cit -were re-' ceived by the city elector- 1 - IBcer, Mr. P. F. Notley, this morn: )i». lie supplementary roll closing with ">042 names. The main roll contains 39,055 names, so that the total number of voters for the municipal elections to be held next month is 44,097. Two years ago there were 5101 more names on the roll, the reduction being due to a process of severe purging. The roll was carefully checked with recent Parliamentary rolls, and it was found that thousands were shown as having moved to addresses outside the city boundaries. When inquiries failed to establish that the voter was still a resident of the city his or her name was struck out.
Nominations for Mayor and councillors and for membership of the Harbour and Hospital Boards close on April 19. The system of voting formerly in. operation—the placing of a cross alongside the name of the candidate the elector wishes returned—is to be reverted to this year. "I am sure the counting of the votes will be accelerated," said Mr. Notley. "We found in the past that the voting by means of a cross resulted in only 2 per cent of informal votes, and last year with the system of striking out the name of the candidate the voter did not wish to see elected we had 12J per cent of informalities. I have every confidence in the system of using the cross, a,nd think it will be helpful to the public as well as the officials."
