CIVIC SQUARE SECTION.
APPLICATION DECLINED. iVn offer to lease for five years at a rental of £7 a week free of rates a vacant ssetion on the Civic Square bounded by Queen, Myers and Fergusson Streets was considered by the City Council last evening. It was stated by the agent for the applicant that the land was required for a service station. and a building to the value of £200 would be erected. On the recommendation of the property committee the offer was declined. Mr. H. B. Jenkine wanted to know the reason for the committee's decision, as the revenue would be welcome. Mr D. Henry, chairman of the committee said members had been influenced by the knowledge that a building could not be erected for the price mentioned which would reflect credit on the localitv. The Mayor, Mr. ,G. W. Hutchison, said it would not be fair to other lessees to take a low rental for the section.
