FOR JAMAICA.
NEW ZEALAND BUTTER MORE DIRECT SHIPMENT. LIMITED DEMAND. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) WELLINGTON, this day. The New Zealand Shippi" : ("ompany's steamer Taimii, now l<-.d':n • on the coast, includes in its cargo «>bout 1400 boxes of butter to be discharged at Jamaica. The chances of developing some trade with the West Indies have increased since the two principal lines running between New Zealand and England via Panama have included regular' calls there. At certain seasons they are able to provide an attractive trip for English travellers, who go out by one steamer, and return to England by the next homeward-bound vessel, having enjoyed a little of tropical life, and had the advantage of a pleasant ocean voyage. The present shipment of our butter to Jamaica is not experimental. Supplies nave been going there for years, mostly re-exported from London. When opportunity offers for direct shipment, several New Zealand firms are enterprising enough to secure orders, and the Kangitata took over 1000 boxes of butter to Jamaica last January. The demand in this market i.-i not extensive, though Jamaica in 1030 imported butter and butter substitutes to the value of £53,000. Canada was able to export butter worth £34,000 in 1929, but its trade* dropped in the following year to £13,500, though it formerly enjoyed 90 per cent of the business. Exactly a year ago a controversy arose in Jamaica over the arrival of butter from New Zealand, the farming community protesting publicly against the admission of what it described, erroneously, as "the bounty-fed product of New Zealand." Serious efforts are being made to organise dairy production so that the local demand can be supplied from within the country, but meanwhile New Zealand is getting a modest outlet for its dairy produce in the West Indies.
