FORM U.B. 32.

CHIEF OBJECTION.

STATEMENT OF OUTGOINGS.

MT. ALBERT MEN'S VIEW.

The Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. W. F. Stilwell, placed before the Borough Council last night a report on the use of the new form, U. 8.32, which relief workers are required to sign.

"Our Government have asked only for the credit side of these men's balance sheets," wrote Mr. H. L. Kayes, e member of the council. "I wonder what sort of a shock the Government would get if each man attached to his U. 8.32 form a correct account of his debit. Perhaps it would then bo realised that the man who marched down our main street on his way to the war is quickly and surely being forced into Communism through the worry of not being able to fulfil his obligations to his wife and family." The Mayor reported that he had visited, with the engineer, the works at Asquith Avenue and McDonald Street. "I was particularly anxious," he said, "lest the him should commit the initial error of putting themselves 'offside' by a hasty decision not to comply. I found the chief objection was the fact that no provision was made in form U. 8.32 for liabilities and outgoings other than rent, and was assured by the men that were facilities available for them, to state such outgoings, they would complete the forms. A similar assurance was given on the remainder of the borough works.

"I accordingly approached Mr. Slaughter, who readily agreed that the request was reasonable, and he supplied a quantity of forms which could be adopted for the purpose. These were at once distributed, and judging by the use made of them I would say they have met the objections originally offered. "I must commend our men," Mr. Stilwell continued, "for their sound commonsense in seeing where their interests lay, and complying so readily once they understood the position. All men who were available to start on Monday have completed the form, but there still remain outstanding some ten forms from men who do not start until later in the week. Theso will probably be handed in when they arrive on their jobs."

Mr Stilwell added that he thought it probable that the form U. 8.32 would be improved and made simpler, but Mr. Slaughter had stressed the fact that it was°essentia! for the Unemployment Board to knew fully the men's assets and liabilities. >
