SYDNEY'S BRIDGE.

TRAFFIC IN FIRST YEAR. OVER 27,000,000 PEOPLE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, March 17. The harbour bridge was opened for traffic on March 19, 1932—50 that by Sunday next a whole ,year will have elapsed eince Captain de Groot and Mr. Lang between them cut the fateful ribbon, and released the great tide of traffic which has been sweeping up and down that gigantic causeway ever nince. Perhaps the best way of indicating the importance of the bridge and its value to the people of Sydney is to quote some of the statistics that testify to its usefulness as a means of transport and transit. Within these twelve months 27,000,000 people have crossed it in' trams, trains and motor cars—to say nothing of a more energetic million and a half who have saved tolls and fares by walking across. The average number- of vehicles crossing daily is nearly 11,000, carrying about 21,000 people, including drivers. This gives a total 'of .about 3,700,000 vehicles, carrying 7,500,000 people, for the year, and of these vehicles over 80 per cent are motor cars. In addition, 13,000,000 passengers have crossed by rail and 7,000,000 by tram; and about 50,000 pedestrians cross every week.
