CITY COUNCIL WORKS.
PRIORITY OF CLAIMS,
TASK FOB. COMMITTEE. The decision of tlie City Council to undertake new work at an estimated cost of £71,000, at improved rates of pay, lias produced a large crop of applicants for jobs. "A number of men have applied to me personally and to councillors to be put on," said the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, this, morning. "The works committee has the matter in hand," he said, "and a scheme is being drawn up fixing the priority for various classes of men required. The main idea that is being considered is that the work should be distributed amongst men who will benefit most by the council's scheme." Originally the Mayor proposed a works programme of £100,000, but at the last meeting of the City Council the programme was reduced to the expenditure of £71,000 on storm water drainage work for the lower part of the city and the construction of a service reservoir at Mount Hobson. For the former work the labour cost is estimated at £30,700, and for the reservoir at £17,325. Surveys are being completed by the city engineer's department for both schemes.
