REGATTA DAY.
DISPLAY OF YACHTS.
OVER 200 CRAFT APPEAR. AUCKLAND'S ANNUAL GALA. The 83rd regatta, carried out by those interested in aquatic matters in the city, was held yesterday under ideal weather conditions. From early morn there was activity in the many bays where all types of craft moor, and white sails gradually converged upon H.M.s. Dunedin, which lay off Prince's wharf, close enough to give spectators from there and the end of Queen's wharf ■ a much closer view of starts and finishes than has been usual in the past few years. Every steamer in port "dressed ship," the Naval dockyard being a blaze of colour. Promptly at ten, the starter, Mr. Geo. Mobberley, got the first of the sailing races off, a fleet of the new Wakatere class making a picturesque showing. The 25 class followed, to assist in dotting the harbour toward North Head with sail. Meanwhile the naval' whalers rowing race was under way. There was no doubting the enthusiasm over this race, or any mistaking of the keenness with which it was followed from ship, shore and following launches. Wild cheering greeted Philomel's wiu after a very close finish. In the area between the western wall and Prince's wharf the outboard and speed boat races were, held. It was a case of thrills for spectators and a decidedly bumpy time for competitors, the little craft standing almost on end at times.
The model yaelit section was carried out at the Orakei Basin by the officials of the Orakei Club. The chairman o£ the committee, Mr. Ernest Davis, visited the Basin at 9 a.m. and saw the start of the first race. , .
The seven-footers were sailed in the sheltered water ofT the Devonport Yacht Clubhouse, two races being held.
Aboard the Dunedin officers and crew did all in their power for the officials of the regatta and the large number of visitors who enjoyed the freedom, of the warship.
At the conclusion of the regatta, the committee met on the quarter-deck of the flagship, when Mr. Ernest Davis thanked Captain M. <T. C. De Meric and officers and men for their hearty co-operation in making the regatta such a success. ; Following are the results of the day s racing:—
