NO "CUTS."
IN PUBLIC SERVICE.
CABINET'S DECISION
NEWS LEAKS , OUT.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
The glad news is going around the Public Service that whatever Cabin6t has decided in connection with the further economic programme to be submitted to Parliament, an additional cut
in civil servants' salaries is not con-
templated. Careful as Ministers have been to keep their secrets, this news has leaked out, and seems well substantiated.
There is in operation the original 10 per cent cut, plus the further reductions adopted a year ago, when salaries up to £225 were reduced by an additional 5 per cent, and those up to £720 by another 10 per cent, while the additional reduction beyond the £720 range amounted to 12J per cent. Public servants' superannuation is, however, still threatened with curtailment, which is intended to be retrospective for 10 years. This legislation is still'before a Selcct Committee, which will probably take further evidence before reporting the bill back to Parliament. It will be one of the important and contentious measures for consideration at the resumed session.
