SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Waimauku Sports Club held a dance in the local hall on New Year's Eve, when there was a large attendance, including visitors from the surrounding districts. The hall was gaily decorated with balloons and greenery. The programme was in charge of Messrs. L. Foster and M. A. Kingdom Miss Phyllis Petford (Kuineu) was the winner of a beautiful box of chocolates, and prizes for the Monte Carlo were won by Miss Perkins (Pukekohe) and Mr.- Don KerrTavlor. ■~ " * » • * : A successful function was held in the Northcote Returned Soldiers' Association's Club rooms on New Year's Eve, by the members and their families. It •was essentially a children's gathering, and the evening was spent in games and competitions, the little ones entering thoroughly into the night's enjoyment. A liberal supply of all tliat children desire vvas provided, whilst the members devoted attention to all their wants. The function closed at midnight. A strong committee was responsible for the arrangements, which, were carried out without a hitch.

, The big carnival night of the year, which is always held on New Year's Eve, took place at the rieturcdrome, which proved its popularity by the large attendance. The entertainment began at 7.30 with a special picture, "Travelling Husbands," screening Evelyn Brent and Frank Albertson, followed by a carnival dance, to music supplied by the Whoopee Orchestra. Confetti, carnival hats, balloons and all kinds of favours supplied by the management, added to the gay scene and farewelled the old year and welcomed the new in a festive way. Amongst the large crowd of dancers were: Mesdames Speedy, Hill, Horrobin, Scarborough, Levi, Forbes, Burgess, Harrison, P. Salmon, Whitbread, Edwards, Cummings, Langwell, Waterhonse, Deck, Lockyer, Sellars, the Misses B. O'Neil, B. Gudgeon, O. Scarborough, G. Levi, A. Forbes, W. Aires (Otahuhu), Grinton, M. Barnes, Roma Wilson, L. Ogilvie, U. Platts, Grinton (3), (Papatoetoe), A. Armitage, D. Blomfield, S. Smith, Wade, Gieson, Lawrence, Hinton, K. Williams, J. Higson, Waterhouse, Stubbings (2).
