The def»at of the Nationalist candidate in the mining constituency of Germiston at a by-election by 1181 votes is regarded as a vote of no-confidence in the Government's economic policy. It was the first urban election in which women exercised the vote.
General Smuts, Leader of the Opposition, declares that it is a notice to the Government to quit.
At the general election in 1929 the party strength was: Nationalist (Hertzog) 78, South African party (General Smuts) 61, Labour (Creswell) 5, Labour (National Council) 3, Independent 1.
