SPEEDING MOTORISTS.
WAIKUMETE HILL TRAP. MORE PROSECUTIONS. WAITEMATA COUNTY AND A.A.A. Further prosecutions were brought by the Waitemata County Council in the * :gistrate's Court to-day against motorists for speeding on the Waikumete Hill.
Mr. A. H. Taylor, traffic inspector for the county, said that on Sunday, September 11, he detected a number of motorists passing over the trap at speeds ranging from 35 to 40 miles per hour.
Mr. T. N. Holmden, who appeared for the Auckland Automobile Association, said that the association, at. the suggestion of Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., arranged to patrol the dangerous intersection, On September 11 a patrolman was sent to Waikumcte, and took up his position at the intersection. When Mr. Taylor came along, he ordered the patrolman away, on the ground that he had no authority to interfere with the working of the trap. The patrolman then removed to one end of the trap.
In reply to a question by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., Mr. George R. Hogan, chief traffic inspector for the Auckland City Council, said that in his opinion the trap was an unfair one. It was desirable that the authorities should follow the example of the City Council and paint white markings on the road, to indicate the dangerous intersection. Mr. Holmden said the association was endeavouring to safeguard the interests of motorists by controlling, traffic at the intersection. Mr. Taylor: You are trying to override the Waitemata County Council. Mr. Hunt: It is a particularly bad trap. Mr. Taylor: I admit that. Mr. Hunt said motorists were apparently prepared to spend part of their funds in guarding the area. He suggested that the Automobile Association should communicate with the Main Highways Board regarding the future control of the area. One defendant, who admitted trailing at 40 miles per hour, was fined 10/. The other defendants were convicted and discharged.
