IN THE LAST STRIDE.
A THRILWNG FINISH. PETER PAN'S GREAT EFFORT. (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The "Sydney Morning Herald," commenting on the Melbourne Cup, says: "The race was won almost literally in the last stride. It was the most thrilling finish in the history of the race. Five furlongs from home Peter Pan was about seventh, near the rails, but met with interference, costing him five or six lengths. Duncan manoeuvred him outward and got through the field till, inside a furlong from the post, he was near enough to challenge Yarramba, who had shot to the front. Stride by stride Peter Pan overhauled the leader till they were neck - and neck, and at the supreme moment the challenger forged ahead by a neck and was acclaimed the winner. Shadow King did not have a clear run, but* from a rear position at the back of the course he pushed on doggedly." The "Telegraph" says: "Peter Pan is a turf star of unbounded possibilities, and though lacking Phar Lap's personality, he will adequately fill the champion's place. He ran at the rate of 35 miles per hour, while the velocity of the hardest gusts of wind during the afternoon was only 30. After getting out from a jam it looked a hopeless chase, but Duncan never gave up. When Yarramba shot to the front in the straight the race seemed over, but a hundred yards from the post Peter ran was within half a length, and with a mighty burst gained the advantage. It was an extraordinary effort such as we may never 6cc again."
