MELBOURNE CUP.

WON BY PETER PAN. A FINE PERFORMANCE. INTERFERENCE AT THE FIVE. MELBOURNE, November 1. The Melbourne Cup at Flemington today resulted in a great triumph for the New South Wales three-year-old colt Peter Pan, who won by a neck from Yarramba, with Shadow King two lengths away third. The Aucklander Manawhenua did well to finish fourth, but the other five New Zealand horses, failed to show up. The weather was dull and threatening and there "was an enormous attendance. Peter Pan's victory was remarkable, for interference cost him several lengths five furlongs from home. Yarramba, who was last in the early stages, made a brilliant run and led at the distance. Peter Pan then came fast on the rails and snatched victory from him in the last few strides. Shadow King was a good third. F. McGrath, of Randwiek, trainer of Peter Pan, has a remarkable record this spring. He has won the A.J.C. Derby, Melbourne Stakes and Melbourne Cup with Peter Pan, and the Metropolitan and Cantala Stakes with Denis Boy. W. Duncan, rider of Peter Pan, recorded his second Melbourne Cup success, baring previously won on Night Watch in 1918. He accepted the mount on Peter Pan after Saturday's Melbourne Stakes win. The Dawn Patrol, who was scratched at 11.45, was the only acceptor that did not go to the post, leaving a field of 27. The Running. Induna and Admiral Drake made the early pace from Eastern Chief, Liberal, Shadow King, Manawhenua and Rogilla, with Peter Pan eleventh and Yarramba last. Seven furlongs from home Induna and Rogilla were leading from Eastern Chief, Liberal, Manawhenua, Silent Bird and Havering, with Yarramba still last. Near the five furlongs Peter Pan was interfered with and lost ground, and so also did.Shadow King. Rogilla led at the turn, but a -wellbunched field entered the straight, where Yarramba came fast on the outside and had charge at the distance, but Peter Pan finished brilliantly to beat him by a neck. Shadow King was two lengths away third. Alter the placed horses came Manawhenua, Induna, Oratory, Gaine Carrington, Middle Watch, Silent Bird and Lough iSTeagh, with Admiral Drake last. The time was 3.231. Narrowly Escaped a Fall. The, stewards inquired into the reason for Peter Pan losing ground at the five furlongs .post, and found that the cause was another horse beating Peter Pan for an opening on the rails: Peter Pan narrowly escaped a fall, but the occurrence was accidental. Lynden won the Cup Hurdle Race in brilliant style. He was expertly handled by the New Zealand horseman, I. Tucker, who rode Copey to victory in the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie last June, and has achieved considerable success in Victoria during the last four months. The trainer, F. W. Hoysted, won this event last year- with Taciturn. The Cracksman, owned in Adelaide, scored a comfortable win in the Cup Steeplechase. The Tippler mare Largesse was prominent all the way in the Railway Highweight Handicap, and won comfortably from Call Bird and Hunt the Slipper (New Zealand). Hunt the Slipper's third was a promising effort. Largesse was ridden by the ex-New Zcalander, M. McCarten. The trainer, the veteran, J. Scobie, won the corresponding race last year with Bold Bid. The Two-year-olds. Scobie followed up this success by producing another winner in the next event, the Mimosa Stakes. This was 1 Heroic Lass, frho led throughout, winning by two lengths from Dilly (New Zealand), with Lady Syghton third. Dilly, who is owned by Mr. W. R. Kemball, of Wellington, ran a promising race for second. Casque D'Or got a run on the rails in the straight and won the Yan Yean Stakes handsomely, crediting W. Duncan with his third win for the afternoon. Casque DOr formerly raced in Svdney, but is now under the care of J. Holt, and has done well during the last few months. The Doctor's Orders was second and Actaeon (New Zealand), who finished well, was third. Stake-values to the winners were as follows:—Melbourne Cup, £5000; Cup Hurdles, Cup Steeplechase and Mimosa Stakes, £350 eachr Railway High-weight Handicap and Yan Yean Stakes, £330 each.
