ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Oneliunga Borough Council met last night, Mr. E. Morton, the Mayor, presided. Basin Reserve. —The Auckland Harbour Board advised that, in view of the council's assurance that the entrance to the basin reserve will not be closed until the boat harbour is completed, the board is willing to waive its objection to the vesting in the council of the land required for the embankment across the basin. Employees' Insurance. — A committee was set up to consider a scheme submitted to the council for insuring its employees against accidents and sickness. Special Rate. —The council decided to strike a special rate of %d in the £ to provide interest and other charges on a loan of £3500 for a period of five years, or until the loan is fully paid off. Relief Workers.—ln reply to a request from the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce . for a conference with the council on the question of sending married men to country camps, it was decided that such a conference was 'innecessary. The Mayor said it was not likely that married meii would be sent to camps from Onehunga. Fire-fighting.—The council will receive a deputation from the Manukau Council next Monday night to discuss the matter of fire-fiphtinK protection for the whole or part of Mangere. Onehunga Springs.—Mr. S. Vella, chairman of the water committee, reported that the depth of water in the Onehunga Springs had recently been tested. A million and a half gallons of water had been pumped in four hours without making any appreciable difference to the supply.
