SPRING RACING.
THE AUCKLAND MEETING. EXCELLENT FIELDS CARDED. TWO CLASSIC EVENTS. The acceptances received by the Auckland Racing Club for the opening of tlieir spring meeting on Saturday are most satisfactory, both in point of number and quality, and some excellent racing should be provided. Hunting Cry and Korokio are the most notable defections from the Mitchelson Cup. Antique'still. stands his ground with 9.12, and he is stated tg have improved with, his racing at Avondale. Protomint tvill have some support after his recent dual success, while View Halloo will also have to be considered after his excellent showings during "the last few weeks in sprint races. As a three-year-old he was placed in both St. Legers and he should be a better horse this season. Gibraltar was second in the Great Northern St. Leger last season, and his victories included' the Foley Memorial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Avondale. He showed up for a good way in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham last Saturday week. Te reported to have recovered from the lameness that prevented him starting at Avondale. Royal Artist was fourth in the Wellington Handicap and will have to be considered. Tigerjsm has been placed up to a mile and a quarter, while he was third in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham, one mile, last Saturday week. Great Emblem was second in the Plumpton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Avondale recently and is going along nicely; while of the others Gay Cockade, Flying Prince, Tliespis and Limeen look the best. A few who may be in demand just now are: Protomint, Great Emblem, View Halloo, Royal Artist. Tea Chat and Royal Hunting were the only ones that failed to accept in the Shorts Handicap. Tradesman, who has now won two on end, should again run prominently. Golden Wings is very epeedy, and if right on the day should take some beating, but he has not raced this season. Huntingdon gave every indication of returning to form when he raced at Avondale, and as he has gone on the right way since should race prominently. The classics have filled well. In the Welcome Stakes Princess Doreen, Gipsy Love, Gay Sheila and Midian are all winners this season. The first two failed in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham, in which Midian was second and Wait and See (who is also engaged) third. Midian was second to Fracas in the Roseneath Handicap the next day, which, on top of liis success in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, makes him pretty useful. Gay Sheila has not raced since scoring at Avondale. The winner should come from these. After his dual success at Avondale Pillow Fight will be in demand for the Great Northern Guineas. Jonathan finished second to him in the Guineas, after winning well over seven furlongs on the €rst dav, while Sea Ruler (who is also engaged) was third." Inflation was injured -vdiile in Sydney'and lie may not-be at his best. Aesculus won over six furlongs at Napier Park, while he was second over seven furlongs at Trentham. Midinette, Gold Trail and Tea Trader failed in the Avondale Gitineas, and it does not look as though the public will have any other but Pillow Fight.
