ITALY'S COLONIES.
THE LATEST CENSUS. ONLY 187,341 WHITE SUBJECTS. The Italian Ministry of Colonies liaa just completed a census of the population of the Italian colonial possessions. This has been anything but an easy task, owing to the nomadic character of a considerable portion of the people, the difficulty of finding a sufficient number of native officials endowed with sufficient intelligence to carry out the operation accurately, and to the fact that the natives were extremely loath .to give the required information, fearing that it might further some scheme of the Government to increase taxation. The Ministry believes, however, that the number of inhabitants has been calculated with a considerable degree of accuracy. From the" figures given, it would appear that the total population is 2,454,794, divided as follows: Tripoli, 540,580; Cyrenaica, 164,607; Erythrea, 621,770; Somaliland, 990,715; Dodecannese, 130,855; Italian Concession in Tientsin, 6261. Of the total, 2,207,453 are natives, and only 187,341 are whites, and of these more than 130,000 are in the Dodecannese.
