PERFORATED WATER MAINS
POSSIBILITY OF ELECTROLYSIS ' PIPES NEAR TRAM- LINES. The fact that several perforations had taken place in the past tvyo or' three years on the 27in steel waterworks main from Waitakere along; the Arch Hill isection was pointed out by • the City Council in a letter to the Auckland Transport Board this morning. The letter added that such perforations might have been caused by electrolysie, and if that were the case the council would hold the board responsible for damage to pipes and loss of water due to electrolysis. Three of the water mains were under the tram line at the corner of Ponsoiiby and Karangahapc Roads. Temporary repairs had been effected in each case. The waterworks engineer of the council said that the possibility of electrolysis arose inasmuch ae the main from Point Chevalier to the Ponsonby reservoir, ran closely parallel to the tram line and was thus liable to stray currents.
The board went into committee to die cues the matter.
