FIJI BANANAS.
ENTRY INTO AUSTBAMA. ISLAND GROWERS PLEASED. (From Our Own Correspondent.)., SUVA, October 28. The announcement that as an outcome of Ottawa Fiji is to be allowed to send a quota of bananas to Sydney and Melbourne has given great satisfaction to local residents, who have felt that Australia had closed the door to this small colony, although the majority of our white residents are Australians. While the quota is small, yet it will go a long way to re-establish more friendly feeling locally for the Commonwealth. The good news also comes at a time when the future of the banana industry did not appear bright. Australia has agreed to take approximately 4200 cases of bananas a month at a duty of 2/6 per 100 pounds weight. Formerly the duty placed on Fiji bananas by the Australian Government was 8/ per 100 pounds, which virtually represented an embargo. Although opposition has been expressed by the Queensland growers to the lowering of the duty, local growers consider that the quota is so small that it cannot appreciably affect prices on the Australian market, _,_,_ , ~_ , ....... ; ' u .
