"MYSTERY HIKE."
FIVE HUNDRED PARTICIPATE. VISIT TO WAIMAUKU. Five hundred trampers travelled by the "mystery" excursion train which left Auckland at 9.13 yesterday morning. After alighting from the train at a point about a mile and a half beyond the Waimauku railway station, they tramped for a distance of just under eight miles through the fertile farm lands of Messrs. Gillespie, Copeland, Fletcher and Houghton. Great assistance was given by the owners of the properties through which the trampers walked, cattle being shifted so that the hike could be enjoyed.
Luncheon was taken alongside the glorious Muriwai falls, and after" the meal many of the trampers had a swim in the pool at the foot of the main falls. It was an ideal tramping day, and the party arrived back at Waimauku station about four o'clock.
Miss Esther James, who recently walked from Spirit's Bay to Bluff; said the outing compared more than favourably with others in which she had taken part in other centres.
