MONEY BY TRICK.

OLD OFFENDER GAOLED. LOAN FOR GROCERIES. "This man is really a parasite and has been twice previously declared an habitual criminal," said Detective Sergeant Kelly in the Police 1 Court this morning, referring to John Lennox, aged 67, who -pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing 10/ belonging to Reginald Howard.

Mr.* Kelly said Lennox called at Mr. Howard's shop, said he was a contractor and ordered two desks to be made. Later he was told the desks were ready for delivery and that the price was £8 5/. He said that was cheap and he had thought it would be more. He asked for the loan of 10/ to get some groceries, stating that he would return the following day to take the desks. He failed to return.

"It is quite apparent that Lennox ordered the desks in order to obtain the money by a trick," said Mr. Kelly. "He was last before the Court in August for a similar offence, when his case was adjourned for twelve months and he was ordered to make restitution. He has a long list of previous convictions."

Lennox was sentenced to three months', imprisonment.
