ATHLETICS.

TAKAPUNA G.S. STEEPLES.

JOHNSTON AND DAVIE WIN.

RECORD TIME IN SENIOR. RACE,

Trevor Johnston, of .Bayswater, in winning the Takapuna .Grammar School senior steeplechase yesterday, followed in the footsteps of B. H. Birtwhistle (Auckland Grammar) and N. McCarthy (Sacred Heart College) in breaking records for annual road races this week. In knocking 10 4-5s off the previous record (11.24 2-5), put up by R. Eade in 1930, Johnston confirmed the fine opinion formed of his athletic prowess when he won the mile event at the combined secondary schools' championships in April last.

The course started from the corner of Eversleigh Road, thence to Northborough Road, up Northborough Hill to Jutland Rond. where the junior course branched off to Clifton Road, and then home. The chase led down Stone Street, through Hart Road and Ewen Street to the Takapuna Beach, where a short stretch led the boys to the junior course, thence' after a long climb to finish in front of the school. There were about a hundred competitors in each event. While a strong northerly handicapped the boys at the outset, it was very helpful up the long Incline from Takapuna, Beach, through Clifton Road. Results: — 4 , SJ3NIOR. Championship (24 miles). —T. R. Johnston (11.13 3-5), 1; B. A. Ellis (11.25), 2; It. Cooper (11.32), 3. Sealed Handicap. — G. N. Lawrance (1.45), 10.20 net, 1* If. Ilurren (555), 10.40, 2; T. O'Meara .(555), 10.45, 3. JUNIOR. Championship (two miles). —15. W. Davie (9.45 3-5), 1: N. W. Gordon (9.45), 2; M. Drower (9.49), 3. The winner's time was only 3-5s off R. Josling's record of 9.45, established last year. Sealed Handicap.—G. G. Turbott (1.30), 5.35 net, 1; D. Smith (1.20), -9.7, 2; H. Hughes (1.30), 9.8, 3. Messrs. Keith Anderson and W. H. Thomson directed the organising and handicapping duties. The Takapuna Grammar School's annual boxing tournament will take place in the Gaiety Theatre, Takapuna, on Thursday, October 20.
