Hindenburg Celebrates His Birthday. FOUR SCORE YEARS AND FIVE. I (Received 11 a.m.) BERLIN, October 2. The President, Marshal von Hindenburg, celebrated his 85th birthday to-day. Dense crowds assembled and cheered outside his residence. Paul von BeneckendorfF von Hindenburg, who fought in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-1, was already a veteran at the outbreak of the World War in 1014, when he had actually retired. lie was given the East Prussian command, and was Chief of the General Staff from 1916-18. At the death of the first President, Herr Ebert, in 1025, he was elected to the post, defeating the Communist, Dr. Karl Marx, by just over 1,000,000 votes. He was re-elected in April of this year by a majority of 6,000,000 on the second ballot against Herr Adolf Hitler, leader of the newly-developed Nazis or National Socialists. ""
President von Hindenburg. Hindenburg was responsible for the over-throw of the Bruening regime in June, after one year of office, and for the installation of a non-party Cabinet under a wartime officer, Colonel Franz von Papen.
