DEFALCATION CHARGES.
TREASURY CLERK AT SUVA. LARGE SUMS INVOLVED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, September 21. A sensation was caused to-day by the appearance at the Police Court of Hugh Neville Keay, paying clerk at the Treasury, on no fewer than 27 charges, which included alleged fraudulent application of large sums from £919 down to £4, covering three main dates, namely, March 8, 1932, January 4, 1931, and September 16, 1931: the alleged falsification of Departmental cash books, and the destruction of a rough cash book. The larger amounts included £100, £30, £2-1 18/, £344. £104, £90, £110, £59, £73, £168, £40, £132, £GS, £42, £171 and £187. On the application of Mr. Hollins Crompton, who appeared for the Crown, a remand for eight days was granted. Bail was allowed, self in £50 and two sureties of £100 each. It will be remembered that some months ago the safe at the Treasury was found open, and £703 was missing. The arrest of Beay followed a prolonged investigation by Inspector Kermode.
