SELECTORS' CUP. AUCKLAND AND THE REST. The curtain fell on the hockey season on Saturday, when, at the Remuera grounds, the annual match Reps. v. The Rest for the Selectors' Cup was played. The ground was hard, fast and bumpy, and some interesting hockey was witnessed. The match furnished an excellent opportunity to try out in The Rest eleven some of the younger and most promising players. The selectors of the team wisely availed themselves of the chance, and the players fully justified their claims. The Reps, emerged winners by two goals to nil. Representatives.—Goal, Vail; fullbacks, H. Williamson, F. Clark; halves, Hedges, Robertson, T. Clark; forwards, Reid, Anthony, E. Watts, Bay. Wellbourne. The Rest. —Goal, Crawley ; full-backs, Smith. Gardner; halves, Broun, Jenkins, A. Horspool; forwards, Glanville, A. Anthony, Cooper, Floyd, Ross. The Reps, opened proceedings with a couple of attacks on the Rest's goal, but Smith and Gardner cleared. However, from the left flank a more definite impression was made, and Crawley cleverly prevented P. Anthony from scoring at short range. The Rest, headed by Ross and Floyd, took the ball to the other end, but only a twenty-five eventuated. From a roll in Jenkins sent the forward away. but Hedges came to the rescue and Reid proceeded upfield. A free hit brought relief to the Rest, and they gained a footing in foreign territory. Passing on the right flank enabled the Reps, to reach the circle, but Broun blocked the shot and hit out of danger. The Reps, soon returned, and an exchange of crosshits between Wellbourne and Reid saw the Rest's goal missed by inches. Further pressure saw the Reps, awarded a penalty bully for hitting with the wrong side of the stick, but Smith averted a goal. Long Jutting caused the scene of operations to change frequently, and from a hit by Gardner a nice passing bout between Ross, Floyd and Cooper looked promising. Clark intervened, and both Reid and Watts harried the Rest's defence and Crawley saved at the expense of a corner. Bay and Wellbourne put in a good run on the left, but Smith sent the ball upfield, and Floyd, breaking away, centred nicely to Cooper, but he was unable to turn the ball to account, and the Reps, escaped with a penalty corner. Shortly before half-time was called Bay' broke away, and. reaching the circle, was blocked by Crawley. A run by Reid on the other flank, and a centre from close to the line gave Bay a chance, and he made no mistake. Reps. 1, Rest 0. Renewing the attack immediately B. Watts put a high shot into the net. Reps 2, Rest. 0. The Rest rallied and Ross took the ball into the circle, but was unable to prevent it crossing the line. On the opposite flank Glanville followed the ball into the circle, and another opportunity occurred before play was suspended. Reps 2 Rest , 0 When play was resumed the Rest reached the circle, where Cooper was just too late to shoot, and play immediately gravitated to the other end. Watts secured but Crawley was in the way. After another speedy run Watts met with the same resistance. More attacks followed, and the Rest's defence underwent grave anxiety. Crawley, after speculating unsuccessfully, recovered brilliantly with a reverse stroke. The Rest took a turn on the attack, Vail, from a long hit knocking on,- and a penalty corner resulted. Maintaining the attack the Rest besieged the Reps.' citadel and a couple more corners went to the Rest. Ross had a shot and twice Glanville shot wide. In attempting to break away the Reps were frequently penalised for off side. After some hard hitting Cooper led tiie Rest goal hunting. Ross raced into the circle, but Glanville missed again. Play changed ends, but the Rest were soon back again, Cooper and Broun shooting without result. The Reps, attacked along the right and a centre by Reid saw Crawley save. A penalty corner was smothered by Smith and play evened up for a while until E. Watts headed an attack which proved fruitless. The Rep. forwards bombarded the Rest's goal on several occasions, but the defence held, and when time was called the Rest were storming the Reps.' citadel. Representatives 2 The Rest : 0 Messrs. A. Rivers and R. Avery rcfereed.
