N.Z. ROAD CLASSIC. WAIMATE TO CHRISTCHURCH. WIN FOR ELDERLY RIDER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Riding alone over the last 70 miles "Dad" Porter won the Waimate to Christchurch road cycling race easily to-day. His great ride ranks as one of the most heroic passages in the history of the race. He is i 32 years of age. and has competed many I times in the race. His riding time was 17h 40m 15s. He started with the limit I men, with a handicap of 90 minutes. He left the field three miles north of Hinds, and kept on at a fast pace. . One hundred and twenty-four cyclists, 1 against 90 last year, started in the race this morning in perfect weather conditions. The roads were good except for a few stretches. The limit men left at 7.45 a.m. and the scratch riders at 9.15 a.m. Non-starters were J. Sibley. J. Cole, I N. Jones, It. Fell, A. Mutton, W. Lockington. C. Johnson, S. Hampton, W. Wells and T. Brcsnahaii. Porter passed through Ashburtou at 12.0 a.m., leading, Wilson, at 12.11, being second; Smith, at 12.13. third; and Watson, Lamberton and Crofts (scr), at 1.7 p.m. The placed riders were;—A. E. Porter (Christchurch), 90m, 1; L. Thomas ' (Christchurch), 57m, 2: C. Young (Temuka), 3; T. L. Peach (Methven), 4. Fastest time and Championship.-—W. J. Lamberton (scr), 6h 40m 5Ss. H. G. Watson recorded second fastest time. After the race H. G. Watson entered a protest, alleging that Lamberton. had been guilty of boring in the straight and also when coming into the ground. Watson's time was Oh 40m 58 l-ss. -Dad" Porter put up a magnificent performance. Mile after mile, through -smooth stretches, potholes and sliingle he kept on without varying his pace. Through Selwvn and Norwood he travelled with his head down to the wind, and then, when the surface the road became smoother at Burnham. he increased his speed to sixteen miles an hour, and when he reached the paved road at Rollestou, he achieved eighteen miles an hour. There were crowds along the road on both sides to cheer him on. His speed dropped down a lot over the last ten miles, hut he came home in triumph, with a bodyguard of motor cars filled with officials and with younger riders, who had given up their effort on the road that he had conquered.
