POLISHED BACK TEAM.

The victory of the Auckland junior representatives over a team from the Navy on Saturday shows what the little extra polish can do. The score was 11—6 ; and the Navy worked Tar harder to gain their lesser score than did their opponents to win. It was a case of Auckland backs against Naval forwards, and the latter won. The sailors had a better pack than tfie junior reps.; but the winning forwards had just enough of the game to be able to give the ball to their rear occasionally. Had the Navy kept the ball in the forwards rather than ,Sive it to a set of backs whose combination broke under the strain, the score might have been different. As it was, the losers were - by no means outclassed as a team, though there was only one set. of backs in the picture. Apparently there is no one in junior football who is reliable as a place kick. All the Auckland backß played well, their combination being

worthy of most senior grade teams. There Y er ?i several players of promise in the Auckland rearguard. Stehr, -Currey and Siyncld were perhaps the pick, with Aspden sound at lull-back. He made several brilliant saves, though he also made several tactical mistakes.

Great praise is due to the Navy pack. Every man gave it all lie had, and at the !!. « i n !l hard game they were all as lit as nddles. Their superiority was most marked 111 any loose jilay.
