HOUSEWIVES' COLUMN.

WEEK-END PRICES IN SHOPS.

ONIONS SCARCE AND DEAR

MANDARINS A CHEAP LINE. CAULIFLOWER ADVANCE IN PRICE. Eggs continue to sell at one penny each, an unusually low price so early in the season. Butter, cheese, hams and bacon, as well as meat, show no alteration in price. Further supplies of oranges, mandarins and pines caine to hand from Australia, and the Island steamer brought fruit and tomatoes from the Cook Group. Mandarins are in over-supply, and sell at 6d to 1/ per dozen, according to size. Pines are a little firmer in price, ranging from 1/ to 1/3 each. Sydney navel oranges are still offered at 1/6 per dozen, and small Island oranges at 1/ per dozen. Cook Island tomatoes arrived in good condition and sell at 6d to Bcl per lb. Poorman oranges are offered at 1/ per dozen.

Apparently the very low prices ruling for cauliflower checked supplies coming forward, with the result that at yesterday's auctions there was a sharp advance in the rates paid. Onions also firmed in price as the supplies to hand from Japan were not, in some cases, in good condition, which resulted in higher figures being paid for those from Canada. The retail price is now as high as 5d per lb for sound onions. Supplies of new potatoes were not so heavy this week, and the retail price now ranges from 3d per lb up" to sd.
