OUR PRODUCE IN BRITAIN.
WILL CONSUMER PAY MORE ? REFERENCE BY MR. COAXES. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. What increased price for his foodstuffs will the British consumer have to payas the result of: the Ottawa agreement with New Zealand? Discussing the question on these lines last night, Jlr. Coates said some had claimed that the results of Ottawa would mean an increase in the price of commodities in Great Britain. It had to be remembered, however, that there was a tremendous disparity between wholesale and retail prices, and it was known that the time it took for manufactured articles to come down in price, in comparison with primary articles, left a tremendous gap. He did not expect the British consumer would have to pay very much more than at present.
"When we find thousands of tons of meat sent to boiling-down works," he said, "surely it is time some action is taken to save the primary producer from perishing and being ground to pieces for ever."
