WOOL PRICES UP.

LONDON SALES OPEN.

BRIGHTER OUTLOOK. CROSSBREDS, &D TO IJD higher. KEEN EUROPEAN COMPETITION. There is a much brighter outlook for next season's New Zealand wood clip, judging by the prices ruling at the London sales, which opened yesterday. The Press Association's cabled report reads as follows:—•

"At the wool sales 11,184 bales were offered, including 5233 New Zealand. Approximately 8850 bales were sold. There was a good selection, and a large attendance of buyers, with keen general competition, especially from French, and German buyers. Prices for Merinos, low and medium, were 10 per cent above July closing rates. Fine was 15 per cent up.

"Crossbrede, medium and coarse, were 10 per cent up; fine, 10 to 15 per cent; scoured, 15 to 20 per cent; slipes, medium, 10 per cent; line, 15 per cent. "New Zealand greasy Merino, 'Marchburn,' fetched top price, 12d; average, lid; crossbred, 'Kaka,' 10id and B§d. J '

The following private advices ( have been received from London: —

Bank of New Zealand.—"The sales have opened with strong competition and a large attendance of buyers. There is an active demand by all branches of the trade. Compared with the, close of last series, Merino and fine crossbreds are lid higher and medium and coarse crossbreds are fd to Id higher."

Dalgety 'and Company, Ltd.—"The wool sales opened, competition animated, attendance large, selection good, Continent principal operators, especially German buyers, good support from Home trade. As compared with, closing rates -of last series: Greasy Merino, higher; scoured Merino, Id to ljd higher; greasy half-bred, lid higher; greasy crossbred fine, ljd higher; greasy crossbred, medium and coarse, fd to lid higher; combing slipe, ljd to ljd higher; clothing slipe, $d to Id higher. Scoured crossbred, practically none offered." July Rates. Current quotations at the close of the July series were as follow: Greasy Merino, 60's to 64's, 9Jd to IOJd per lb; ordinary, 60's to 64's, 7-Jd to 8d; inferior, 60's to 64's, 6£d to 7d; halfbreds, 56's, 9id to lOJd; 50's to 56's, 7id to BJd; crossbreds, 50's, 6Jd to 7d; 48's to 50'e, 6d to 6Jd; 46's to 48's, 5Jd to 6d; 44's to 46's, s:ld to sfd; 40's to 44's, 5Jd to 5Jd; 36's to 40's, 4td to 5Jd.
