SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A meeting of the Mount Albert branch of the League of Mothers was held last Thursday, when Mrs. M. Turner presided, and Mrs. Turner, sen., and Mrs. Mills were the hostesses. Visitors included Mrs". Coates, president of the Mothers' Union, and Mrs. Atkinson. Mrs. Coates expressed her pleasure of the Christian unity displayed in an intermingling of the two societies. Mrs. Radford gave the thought for the month. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Richards sang. Mrs. English gave a talk on "The Passion Play at Oberammergau." Afternoon tea was in charge of Mrs. Miller and the committee.

The Unity Tennis Club, Sandringliam, held another of its popular flag five hundred evenings on Monday nighr,, about 80 members and friends being present. Mr. and Mrs. P. Turei and Mrs. Pyne were the prize-winners. A dainty supper was afterwards served, and dancing followed. Those present included the club's president and wife, Mr. and Mre.s.V. A. Coyle, Mesdames Wilson, Hunt, Mills, Reid, Lewis, Walker, Forest, Smith, Williams, sen., Robinson, Tetley, Earwacker, Williams, jun., Harrimau, Jackson, Reardon, and the Misses Wood, Glennie, Gemmel, Smith, Christie, Green, Ferriff, James, Mills, Ostler, Phleugh.

An afternoon bridge party was given on Monday by Mrs. H. Bach at her residence in Bays water. Mrs. F. E. N. Gaudin, president of the BayswaterBelmont Women's Society, explained the need for entertainments of this kind during the coming months before Christmas. The society has taken over the monetary responsibilities connected with the Plunket nurse for the. district, and it is hoped to assist tho fund in this way. Mrs. Bach, being the first to offer lier help, a cordial voto of thanks was accorded her. Those winning prizes for the bridge scoring were Mesdames Robertson and Francis. Amongst tho players were Mesdames Gaudin, MacDuff, M. Blampied, Rentoul, B. Francis, C. Brinsden, Thompson, Malcolm Connelly, Waddell, W. M. White, Pirrit, Sussex, Taylor, R. White, Archibald, Drowerj Blackwood, Retter, Bates R. Adams, Maguire, A. Watts, McLeod, Robertson Lonergan, Eckett, Watson, W. B. Chapman and Miss Stares. The 'card room was arranged with bowls of Iceland poppies, and a dainty afternoon tea was served.

The Lyric Hall, Opotiki, presented a gay scene when the children's fancy dress ball, under the auspices of the Opotiki Municipal Band, was held. There was an exceptionally large attendance of children, the majority of whom wore fancy costumes. Novelty dances were won by T. Hennessy and D. Blundell, and N. Elliott and B. Wilson. After supper Mr. Stevens, bandmaster, thanked all responsible for the success of the evening, and presented the prizes. Later the adults continued dancing until a late hour. Armstrong, "Old Mother Hubbard"; Darcy D'Arcy Glover, Sailor; boys, under five, David Griffiths, "Speed King"; girls, seven to nine, Jean Griffiths, "Traffic Control"; boys, seven to nine, Donald Croll, "Dick Whittington"; girls, nine to 12, J. Brady, Butterfly; boys, nine to 12, Ted Pipe, "A.A.A. Road-signs"; girls, 12 to 10, Betty Walker, Harlequin; boys, 12 to 10, j. Inskip, Holly; most original boy's costume, Barry Mortinson, "J. G. Coates"; most original girl's costume, Dora Snell, "Pipe Stand"; most humorous costume, G. Shalfoon, old man; two special prizes were awarded to little Betty Parkinson, Hawaiian and to Joyce-Tasker, Violets.

Mrs. Ackroyd Hammond, of Waterloo Quadrant, entertained a number of guests yesterday afternoon, prior to her leaving for Sydney on Friday. The lounge and drawing room were artistically arranged in pink and blue flowers, the tea tables being decorated in golden Iceland poppies. The hostess wore a black and white ensemble. Among the guests were: Mesdames Eric Austin, B. Worrall, C. Clifford, Nutford, Trevor Simpson, Quartley, Matthews, Robinson, C. Aitken, Alexander, D. Clark, Thompson, Misses Ewart, Girlie Porter, Betty Sharman, Madge Graham and Eileen Culling.

Kumeu Hall was gay with danccrs on Saturday evening, when a dance was given under the au&pices of the Wharepai and Haeremai lodges of Kumeu. Extras were played by Miss G. Faulkner. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltzes were Mr. and Mrs. Stevens and Miss J. Smith and Mr. Eon. Lewis. Among those present were Mesdames SmithAnderson, L. Hamlin, I. Owtram, D. C. Morrison, H. A card evening, arranged by the Papatoetoe Croquet Club, was held in the Bowling Club pavilion, Great South Road, Papatoetoe, last night. The hostesses were Mrs. W. Cutforth and Mrs. J. Daisley. In progressive bridge and 500 the winners were Mrs. Ross and Mr. F. Burnside (bridge), Mrs. Foss and Mr. A. Civil (500). Among those present were:—Mesdames It. P. Hill, F. M. Waters, R. An enjoyable evening was spent in the Public Hall, Otahuhu, where the Otahuhu Old Time Dance Club continued their series of old-time benefit dances last Saturday. The orchestra was composed of four instrumentalists from Auckland, who sat beneath a canopy of coloured streamers. Tho final of the waltzing competition was won by Mr. and Mrs. B. Taylor, with Miss Briggs and MrWay second. In the two Monte Carlo waltzes, the first was won by Mrs. F. Arnold and Mr. Wells, the second by Miss Thomas and Mr. 11. Piper. Supper arrangements were in the hands of Miss L. Cochran and Miss Miller. An extra was played by Miss Christian and Mr. Brentnall. Mr. C. Taylor (Mangere) judged the waltzing. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Stokes, Brisman, Markwick, Craig, Ecclcs, Boyd, Sawyer, Parker, Toms, Mathias, Pengelly, Dyson, F. Arnold, Massey, B.
