PENNY SECTIONS.
milfobd-bayswateb, buses. experiment approved. _ — V The application of the North Shore Transport Company, Ltd for pennsion to institute a number of penny sections on the Bayswater-Milford route was granted by the No. 2 Licensing Authority this morning. tl was stated that the arrangemen for six penny sections on the route was in the nature of an experiment to bring people into the shopping areas. A three months' trial was sought. A request was made on behalf or tnc Western Area Ratepayers' Association that Everleigh Road to Belmont be also included in the penny sections. It was contended,by the company that Belmont was not a shopping area, but if the experiment was successful the company might eventually be prepared to institute penny sections throughout the district, It was not prepared to include Belmont in the present arrangement. In connection with a request that the weekly charge for pupils from Mdford attending the Takapuna Grammar School be reduced from I/16 to 1/3, making it the same as that for children going from Milford to the Belmont school, half a mile further on, the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. Guiniven, stated that the council was not greatly concerned in the matter. There was dissatisfaction over the difference in the charge, and the council was interested to the extent that it would like to see this dissatisfaction overcome. The difference in the size of the pupils attending the two schools was stressed by counsel for the company in seeking the retention of the present charges. The average age of the Belmont children was nine years and four months, while that of the Grammar School pupils was 14 years 7 months. As the company's license comes up for review in it was agreed, in sanctioning the penny sections, that the new scale be granted until that time. No alteration -was made in the charges for the school children.
The Id sections approved are as follows:—Sheriff's Corner (Milford terminus) to Minnehaha Avenue, Sheriff's Corner to Nortlicote Road, Minnehaha Avenue to The Strand, Northcote Road to The Strand, The Strand to Hauraki Road, and Hauraki Road to Eversleigh Road.
