W. J. McLEAN'S TEAM. GAY ROSE IS PROMISING. W. J. McLean, who is transferring his team from Cambridge to Matamata, arrived here this week with Lucess, Nas--3 sock, Master Norval, Venture (a four-year-old by Valkyrian—Wauohope mare J, Daylark and Gay Cavalier. The two iirstnamed are very fit horses after their winter racing and will be starters on the first available opportunity where the stakes are sufficient to afford inducement. Gay Rose was given a smart three furs longs on the course proper this week and 1 showed pace enough for encouragement. 2 She is a two-year-old filly by Gay Shield — - Autumn Rose; therefore, a half-sister to i Lucy Rose, and she should come to hand early this season. , It. J. Mateer's other candidates for Avondale—Lady Lulu and Valroe —con- , tinue on the right way. The former, particularly, is doing work good enough to 1 predict success during the spring. Like all Lucullus stock, she is partial to going 1 with the sting out of it. Last Lap and Chief Lap are both doing , slow work and carry rather a robust appearance. It is apparent tiiat their ; owner-trainer, Mr. W. Casey, is not hurrying this pair. , Cocktail is the name granted for the Peach Brandy gelding recently put into work by Mr. A. Stewart. Welcome Boy has been brought over from the East Coast and has entered Mateer's stable to be prepared for summer racing. . Welcome Boy won three times last season. His efforts this season will be concentrated on hurdle aivl high-weight racing. He was schooled by R. E. Thomson before he went out in the autumn and shaped proficiently. With the addition of McLean's team there are now approximately 40 horses in training at this centre. ' .
