WARO MINE.

' APPEAL TO CABINET. i i DEPUTATION'S PROPOSALS}. t REQUESTS TO BE CONSIDERED. ! A sympathetic hearing is reported to ' have been given the representative det putation which waited on the Government in Wellington yesterday concerning , the crisis which has developed at ■ Hikurangi through the radical reduction in orders from the Waro co-operative 1 colliery. The deputation consisted of the Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. W. Jones; Mr. F. Elliott, representing the Whangarei County Council; Mr. G. Scott Davidson, managing director of the collieries; Mr. R. Nesbit, chairman of the Hikurangi Town Board; Mr. A. J. Murdoch, M.P. for Marsden; Mr. H. M. Rush worth, MP. for Bay of Islands, and representatives of Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement Works, and' the Hikurangi Coal Company. Mr. Murdoch, who returned to Auckland this morning, stated that the deputation had conferred with the Prime Minister, the Minister of Mines, the chairman of the Railways Board, and the deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board, and represented to them the desperate position which had arisen through the orders from the cooperative concern having been reduced by 50 per cent weekly. The deputation asked that consideration be given to a proposal for an extension of conjunctive orders to the Waro mine and the Hikurangi mine. It was suggested also that there should be one pumping system in operation for both mines, under which the running coets would be cut down by half. Attention was also drawn to the danger of ruination by flooding to both mines should one be compelled to close down, and Ministers were reminded that there was a good deal of Government money invested in Hiku rangi. The deputation was advised in reply that immediate consideration would be given the representations to see if any me'Uns could be found of relieving the position.
