NEW AWARD SOUGHT.
DAIRY FACTORY WORKERS.
10 PER CENT REDUCTION.
ALTERATION IN HOURS
Proposals have been filed by the employers for a new award with the Auckland Creameries, Cheese and Butter Factories Union to replace the award which expired in 1931. An all-round 10 per cent reduction in wages is sought, and with respect to youths, changes designed to enable employers to take on more boys are proposed.
For butter factories the hours of work suggested are 5U per week of seven days from August 1 to March 31, and 44 hours from April 1 to July 31. The present hours are 5G a week from August 15 to March 15, and 44 for the other months, so that the effect of the suggested alteration is to add a month to the period in which more hours are worked.
There are to be no fixed hours for cheese factories. These will be fixed according to the time it takes to make the cheeses. The present hours are GO hours from August 14 to May 14, 4S hours from May 15 to June 10 and 38 hours from June 17 to August 13.
It is proposed to pay youths under 20 starting at manfacture 15/ a week for the first year. 22/0 for the second and 30/ for the third. Thereafter award rates will apply. At present the_ wages for youths, which are paid on a different basis, range from £1 0/3 for boys between 15 and 16 tip to £2 7/3 for youths of 10.
The dispute will be considered in a conciliation council.
