GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

POTATO SUPPLIES PLENTIFUL VALUES MAY EASE. QUALITY AT FAULT. There are fair stocks of potatoes in Auckland stores at the present time. The Waipiaita and Port Waikato have both brought cargoes from the South, and these will be followed by a shipment due by the Kaitoke on Friday. As a consequence the market will be over-supplied, and as there is no strength in the Southern position local values may be expected to ease. At the moment the market is fairly steady, but this is really due to the anxiety of merchants to secure sound lines. There is a big proportion of questionable quality in late arrivals. In this connection a Southern paper notes that "lines showing growth or signs of blight are practically unsaleable." Ex wharf price to-day is from £7 10/ to £8 per ton, according to quality, and through store £8 5/. Japanese Onions. Pukekohe onions have been practically cleaned up, and the market is now quite dependent upon the Japanese product. A shipment of 2000 eases arrived by the Brisbane Maru yesterday, and as the quality is .satisfactory local needs can be met from this source. Oats and Chaff. There is no change in the market for oats and chaff. B Gartons are quoted at 4/4 per bushel, and chaff at £8 15/ per ton, with restricted business. Dearer Wheat. Despite the fact that there are substantial stocks of fowl wheat in the South, holders there have at last been able to force prices up, and there has been an advance within the last couple of days of from Id to lVzd per bushel. When this rise is reflected locally consumers will have to pay 6/6 per bushel. African Maize. The local market is still supplied with African maize, and a further shipment is expected by the s.s. Tisnaren on Thursday. The latest cargo will bring chiefly crushed and ground maize, which come in free of duty. Fair business is being done in the Bay of Plenty for direct railing to Waikato and contiguous districts, on the basis of 4/3 per bushel on trucks. Of the position in Poverty Bay our correspondent telegraphs as follows:—No demaud exists at present for Gisborne maize, in view of heavy stocks held in Auckland as a result of African importations and also because of the low price which Bay of Plenty growers are quoting. Gisborne quotations remain at 4/6 nominally, but it is not expected that any business will be done until the market is cleared of present stocks."
