F.A. TROPHY FINANCE.
OTAGO'S PROFITABLE SEASON,
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
DUNEDIN, this day,
Tho gate at the Otago v. Auckland F.A. trophy match totalled £230, and, after allowing for the heavy expense of bringing the Auckland team to Dunedin, the profit on the game amounted to £49. The chairman of the Otago Association stated , that the New Zealand Council had received £40 as its percentage from the three trophy matches played at Dunedin this season, while, during the five years Auckland held the trophy the council had lost £2000.
It should be stated that for the first two years during which Auckland held the F.A. trophy it was played for on the Plunket Shield .principle, involving heavy travelling expenses each season. Alter that the holders met the expenses of the challengers out of the gate money, and, under this arrangement, Auckland only had challenges from Wellington, neither Canterbury nor Otago offering to come north. It was during the two years that the New Zealand Council conducted the competition on the Plunket Shield principle that the money was lost, for the gates when Auckland and Wellington met always cleared the expenses incurred.
